Intone a Tale of Lament As We Grow Old (2024)
Video projection | HD, colour, sound | 4'01”
by Kitty Yeung 楊適榕
The artist envisions reenacting the scene of the last Ming emperor, Chong-zhen, and his faithful eunuch, Wang Sing-yan, hanging themselves together at the summit of Coal Hill.
The scene is presented on two screens through the medium of film and choreography. Wang Sing-yan enduring heartache as he allows the weight of Emperor Chong-zhen to slide across his own back while lying on the ground. Once their solemn farewell is complete, Wang Sing-yan also meets his fate by hanging himself on the opposite side.
Within this artwork, the exploration extends beyond the depiction of the ambiguous affection between master and servant. It also incorporates elements of unconditional love, embodied by Malaysian dancer Ix Wong, who portrays Wang Sing-yan and expresses his love for his deceased husband. It simultaneously explores the theme of forbidden love due to the boundaries imposed by nations.
